Professional Eye Exams

We will spend the required amount of time to accurately and thoroughly test your eyesight and investigate your eye health. All ages are welcome, from preschool to seniors. Please come equipped with sunglasses and perhaps a driver as dilating eye drops are often used.

Children’s Vision

As a parent, you may wonder whether your preschooler or young child has a vision problem or when you should schedule your child’s first eye exam.

Eye exams for children are extremely important, because up to 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child’s vision problem can be crucial because children often are more responsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed early.

According to the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO), infants should have their first comprehensive eye examination between 6 – 9 months of age. Children then should have additional eye exams at age 3, and then every year after during the school years.

Early eye examinations are crucial to make sure children have normal, healthy vision so they can perform better at schoolwork or play.

Contact Lenses

We fit contact lenses for all optical errors including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. Patients are wearing contacts at all ages so don’t hesitate to ask!

Laser Vision Correction

Drs. Flatt, D’Silva, Code & Nickel are all affiliates of TLC (The Laser Centre). We provide assessment and counseling for those considering laser vision correction. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are all correctable conditions. If you elect to proceed with LASIK or PRK, we will provide follow-up care in our office for one complete year after your procedure.

Retinal Imaging

The retina of the eye is like a sensor in a digital camera or film in the older analogue cameras. Our technology will help us to assess your retinal health and provide a baseline for future examinations.

Optical Coherence Tomography – OCT

Can be thought of as an MRI of the eye. As optometrists, it allows us to view features like the macula, optic nerve and cornea at a detail level measured in microns (millionths of a metre). Sophisticated analysis software allows us to evaluate internal structures of the eye in two and three dimensional views. These views will enable us to uncover previously unseen conditions and other eye health concerns. Your images will also be compared with a normal database in the population. OCT is important even if you don’t have a previously diagnosed condition.

Topcon TRK-1P

We strive to stay current through the acquisition of new technology as it becomes available. Our automated equipment assesses the visual system on five fronts. It measures the precise separation of the eyes, the eye’s optical error, shape and thickness of the cornea and eye pressure. These pieces of data assist with prescribing glasses and contacts, glaucoma detection and assessment for laser vision correction, to name a few.

Red Eye Treatment

We are licensed to prescribe medications for all types of red eyes including infection, inflammation and dryness.

Visual Field Testing

A visual field test maps out what your world looks like to you. It measures the area of vision, or how wide of an area your eye can see. Glaucoma is often called “The Silent Thief of Sight” because it usually is a painless process that mostly affects the peripheral, or side vision, first. Other diseases, such as cataract, stroke, macular degeneration and diabetes, can also influence the visual field. There are different types of visual field tests. The one most commonly used the Humphrey visual field, which consists of a center fixation light and blinking test lights in your side vision. The Zeiss FDT is another instrument that we have added to our testing routine. FDT (Frequency Doubling Technology) quickly evaluates your side vision and nerve tissue connecting eye to brain.
